Hyperliquid [$HYPE] is unstoppable, but markets rarely stay that simple. Behind the strong exterior, things are looking shaky.
Here’s why.
Hyperliquid is now in a league of its own
Hyperliquid’s notional volume is at $249.2 billion. That’s more than double the $106 billion recorded by its nearest competitor, TradeXYZ.
The gap only gets wider from there.
Aster was at $49.3 billion, while Lighter, Kalshi and edgeX are all below $40 billion.
LIquidity tends to attract even more liquidity, and that becomes self-reinforcing real quick. More volume brings deeper markets, and in turn, more traders.
Hyperliquid Strategies turned $HYPE into a big balance sheet bet
It’s not just the traders who believe.
Nasdaq-listed Hyperliquid Strategies more than doubled its $HYPE treasury to 29.3 million tokens. They were worth $1.9 billion at the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
The company raised $647 million through equity financing. Since then, it has deployed another $773.4 million to buy 16.5 million $HYPE tokens.
That is a sizeable commitment to a single ecosystem. Most of those tokens are also being staked, so those assets are being put to work for more yield.
Too many traders on one side?
Now, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. We have too many traders leaning the same way.
Over the one-month liquidation window, about 80% of liquidation exposure is on the long side, versus 20% on shorts.
It’s a lot more stretched at three months: 82% longs and 18% shorts.
According to Joao Wedson, CEO of Alphractal, that imbalance may be dangerous.
A price decline appears to be the more likely scenario.
The concern is that $HYPE’s success pulled too much bullish positioning into the market. The short-term structure is going to punish late buyers.
Will we survive a shakeout?
The next move may matter less than it first appears.
If $HYPE holds this level, it could be strong enough for another move higher. If too many long positions start closing, price could fall to the lower liquidity levels.
A yellow fork in the road that’s worth watching.
Final Summary
- Hyperliquid leads perp DEX volume; Hyperliquid Strategies holds about $1.9B in $HYPE.
- If bullish positioning unwinds, things could go south quick.
