Shinhan Asset Management said on September 14 that it received final approval to serve as a “super validator” on the Canton Network, the institutional blockchain whose participants include Nasdaq, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corp. (DTCC) and Goldman Sachs, according to Seoul Economic Daily. The South Korean firm, part of Shinhan Financial Group, one of the country’s largest financial groups, will start by testing tokenization technology before moving to official activity once domestic rules take shape.

What a Super Validator Does

A super validator verifies blockchain transaction records to help keep the network running stably and takes part in key policy decisions. The role lets Shinhan Asset Management participate in network operations without directly holding digital assets, positioning it alongside firms such as Fireblocks and Ledger, which joined Canton in the same capacity. Canton’s super validators form a group of regulated institutions that help govern and secure the network, a model the Foundation has used to bring financial firms into on-chain settlement.

From June MOU to Final Approval

The approval follows a memorandum of understanding Shinhan Asset Management signed with the Canton Foundation in June. The two sides spent the intervening months negotiating the firm’s role and the terms of its participation before recently wrapping up those talks, the company said.

“We have successfully completed talks on the detailed terms of our cooperation with the Canton Foundation,” an official at Shinhan Asset Management said. “We will keep preparing for tokenization and digital finance while watching how the domestic rules take shape.”

Waiting on Korea’s Tokenized-Securities Rules

Until South Korea enacts laws and subordinate rules on tokenized securities, Shinhan Asset Management plans to focus on proof-of-concept work for its tokenization technology and services. Once financial regulators spell out their guidelines, the firm intends to begin official activity in stages within the permitted scope. The Canton Network is designed to connect different financial systems and assets while limiting how widely transaction information is disclosed, and counts HSBC and BNP Paribas among its other participants.

Shinhan Financial Group said it will consider participation by affiliates including Shinhan Securities and Shinhan Fund Partners, with Shinhan Asset Management taking the lead. The approval extends a run of institutions joining Canton as the network pushes deeper into regulated real-world asset tokenization.
